What helps relieve minor skin irritations such as eczema and psoriasis?

Pine Tar
There are many plants in nature that help relieve the irritation that often occurs with eczema and psoriasis. We use a variety of these plants on our skin products. Pine Tar comes from Pine trees and is said to help sooth itching and flakiness of the skin. Calendula, part of the Marigold family, contains anti-inflammatory properties which helps to reduce swelling and dryness as well as retaining moisture in the skin. Try one of our pine tar and calendula soap bars for any eczema or psoriasis issues.

Calendula
We have already had the pleasure of hearing positive feedback about our calendula soap bars for a customer with eczema.  It has worked so well for them they returned to us to order an entire loaf of our calendula soap! Great to hear such wonderful feedback about our products!

Natural Bug Spray

We introduced our natural bug spray this Spring 2015 and it has been a huge success! After doing some research we came up with two different scents containing essential oils said to repel bugs. In addition to being a bug repellent, the spray is a skin moisturizer. Floral is lavender, lemongrass and peppermint scented, Woodsy is cedarwood, rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint scented. Sometimes i will spray myself just for the aromatherapy properties of the essential oils and how it makes me smell.

I have also discovered I can use these bug sprays on my two dogs! Earlier this year my dogs continuously had ticks and mosquito bites on them after being outside. After spraying them with our natural bug sprays before letting them outside I noticed they no longer attracted ticks nor had any mosquito bites!

Our bug spray is FREE of toxic pesticides!!

West Coast To Midwest

Our family about 15 years ago.
MacSuds Soap Co. is made up of my Mom, Sandi, the business woman and artist behind this whole creation, me, Tabitha, the tester of products, and helper of new creations and scents; and very soon my sister, Heather, as a sales consultant in the Texas area. Our dad, Greg, is also involved in our family business as the craftsman of our soap dishes. We have all recently transitioned to the Midwest from Northern California within the last few years. Our parents, my husband and I have settled down in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, while my sister, Heather is stationed at Ft. Hood in Texas as she is currently serving in the United States Army.

How long will a bar of our handcrafted soap last?

The length of time your bar of handcrafted soap will last depends on a few factors: curing time, drainage between use, and amount of usage. After a batch of our handcrafted soap is poured it will harden for at least 24 hours then removed and left alone for another 24 hours. The soap loaf is then cut into bars and left to cure (dry) for 4 weeks. The longer the soap is left to cure the harder the bar will be as well as adding to the length of time the soap might last. To help the soap bar last even longer it is best to use something that allows proper/complete drainage of the bar in between usage. A soap net, a mesh sack you place the soap bar in and can hang to let dry between use. A soap deck is also a great way to allow the soap bar to dry between use by allowing air to circulate around the bar of soap.
With that said, if the soap has cured for about 4 weeks or longer and provided drainage to dry between use, a bar of our soap will last 2 to 3 months, depending on use.

What is glycerin and why is it important?

Glycerin is a natural skin humectant, which means that it attracts and retains moisture on your skin; it is like a natural skin lotion in the soap.  Glycerin is retained in handcrafted soap, opposed to commercial soap, in which the glycerin is extracted and sold to industries where it is used in pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, and other products.  By retaining the glycerin in handcrafted soap the consumer gets a mild, pure soap that gently cleanses the skin without irritating or drying.

What is the Saponification Process?

The Saponification process happens with a specific amount of oils and butters are mixed properly with sodium hydroxide (lye). Once this process happens, the lye is neutralized and glycerin is created.  There is no harm from the lye once it has been through the saponification process.

Importance of Butters and Oils

Oils & Butters make moisturizing soap
Shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil are the main butters and oils we use in our soaps.  They are great for moisturizing the skin and retaining moisture within the skin.  Another important part of using butters and oils in soap making is to complete the saponification process.

Soaps without Lye and why they are bad for you

The only way you can get a soap like product without using lye is to add a surfactant like sodium lauryl sulfate to water. Surfactants create lather, so you’re basically just getting lathery water that will act as an industrial strength detergent. As mentioned, a lot of surfactants can be irritating and so strong that they are very drying to the hair and skin. This is the super cheap way big companies go about creating shampoo, dish soap, and other liquid soap-type things in our lives. These concoctions are not true soap, but since they’re mostly water, chemicals, and petroleum byproducts, they sure are cheap.

Melt and Pour Soaps, are they lye free?

Melt & Pour clear soap (store bought NOT handcrafted)
Some people think that using a melt & pour soap base is a good way to get around using lye. While this may be true, first off the melt & pour soap was made with lye by somebody else, so it was still involved in the process, and secondly, the melt & pour bases often have questionable ingredients in them, like sodium lauryl sulfate (known to be irritating), so if you’re worried about irritation, handcrafted soaps from scratch are your best option.

Why do you need Lye in soap?

Soap is an alkali (like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) combined with fats. So, by the very definition of “soap”, you cannot have soap without lye. That is like trying to make a baking soda and vinegar volcano without the vinegar. No vinegar and you’ve just got a pile of baking soda. No lye, and you’ve just got a bucket of fat.

It is important to use very precise amounts of lye, butters and oils in order to completely neutralize the lye and create a luxurious lathering soap that will moisturize the skin.  We pride ourselves in having this calculation mastered and have never had any issues with the lye still being active in the soap.
